The 97th Academy Awards

Writer: Andrew SichakAndrew Sichak

On Sunday, March 2, 2025, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted the annual 97th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. The Oscars are widely recognized as the main awards ceremony for film production in Hollywood. The first Academy Awards were hosted back in 1929, and served as a starting point for awards ceremonies in general for film.

The 2025 Oscars started with Kieran Culkin winning Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Real Pain, which was directed and written by Jesse Eisenberg. Culkin was the favorite of the night after his recent Golden Globes and SAG Awards wins, but also due to his charm in the film. The next category was for Costume Design, which was taken home by Paul Tazewell for Wicked. Tazewell is the first African American male to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design, beating out tough competition from films like Gladiator II and Nosferatu.

Best Original Score was taken home by Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist, a much deserved win. Blumberg created one of the most striking and innovative scores of the past decade, implementing many intricate sounds within his music. After his speech, Blumberg was forced off by the band when they started playing music, hinting that he needed to wrap up to keep schedule, which caused a bit of an outcry on social media.

For the writing awards, Conclave, written by Peter Straughan, won Best Adapted Screenplay. Anora, written by Sean Baker, won Best Original Screenplay. Both Conclave and Anora were heavy favorites for these awards going into the night, and many were happy to see Conclave get an award due to their lack of wins in other categories.

The award for Best International Feature Film was taken home by I’m Still Here, a Brazilian drama film about connections between family. This was a surprise to many as Emilia Perez was the frontrunner for this award. This was then followed by Best Animated Feature Film, which was won by Flow. This is a historical win as Flow was created on a laptop in Latvia. Flow is the first film to ever win out of the country of Latvia.

The backend of the night is where audiences were looking, as Best Cinematography was taken home by Lol Crawley for The Brutalist. Next, Adrien Brody took home the Best Actor award for his performance in The Brutalist. Brody set an Oscar record for longest speech, sitting at five minutes and forty seconds. The band attempted to play music to cue Brody to wrap up but Brody waved them off, insisting that he was almost done. This action caused outrage on social media, with some commenting that the action was arrogant and disrespectful. On the other hand, many believe it is justified as Brody has won his second Oscar and possibly cemented himself as one of the greatest actors in the world. Best Director was taken home by Sean Baker for Anora, which was no surprise to many. The biggest surprise of the night was Mikey Madison beating out Demi Moore to win Best Actress. The final award, Best Picture, was won by Anora, directed by Sean Baker. The film was by far the biggest winner of the night, raking in five Oscars total.
