With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I feel the only way to truly get in the spirit for this captivating holiday is to watch endless romantic comedies. I like to think of myself as a romantic comedy connoisseur, so here are a few recommendations I give to you to make the most out of your Valentine’s Day.
Personally, my favorite romantic comedy is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. This movie takes place in New York City (arguably the best place to set a romantic comedy) and stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. Kate Hudson plays a professionally unfulfilled journalist, not allowed to write about topics she is truly passionate about. She ends up coming up with an article idea to date a guy and, within 10 days, make him break up with her, to teach her readers what not to do. Matthew McConaughey plays a businessman who places a bet that he can make any girl fall in love with him by his deadline to make an advertisement, which is conveniently also in 10 days. This movie has a perfect blend of romance and comedy and is my go-to when I need a laugh.
I also believe that Notting Hill is a great way to lift your romantic mood this Valentine’s Day. This movie takes place in the UK for the most part, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Julia Roberts plays a very famous actress, while Hugh Grant plays a bookstore owner, and the two meet at his bookstore. She ends up constantly visiting the bookstore while in London, which brings them closer. However, with her entirely booked schedule, we spend the movie exploring whether they can develop a relationship. This movie has more drama than comedy in it, but it is nonetheless a playful film that is perfect for Valentine’s Day.
You’ve Got Mail is also one of my favorite romantic comedies. If you liked How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, you will undoubtedly like this too. This film is also set in New York City, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Meg Ryan plays a children’s bookstore owner, while Tom Hanks plays a businessman who just opened a Barnes and Noble near the bookstore. This ends up creating a heavy rivalry between the two; however, behind the scenes, they both are anonymously emailing each other, both unknowingly. We spend the movie watching them learn to love each other. This movie has very funny side characters, and is a perfect pick if you’d like to watch a fun romantic comedy with your friends.
Romantic comedies are a perfect pastime at any time of the year, but their zest is nevertheless highlighted during Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re looking to watch a romantic comedy with your partner, your friends, or even your parents, these three are great options for you to consider.
