Powder Puff is a well-known tradition at Loveland, as well as many other high schools. It is part of our homecoming week traditions, and takes place right after the homecoming parade. Powder Puff is where there are girls from every grade who sign up and get picked to compete in one or more two-touch football games in front of a crowd of their peers, up at the football field. There will be 1 or 2 coaches for each Powder Puff team, who are required to have played or have a solid understanding of football.
Each team consists of at least 10 girls. This year, the freshmen have a total of 20 girls, sophomores have 19, juniors have 11, and seniors have 20. Looking at the coaches for each team now, the freshmen coaches are Wyatt Rahm (9) and Yantra Hawk (9). The sophomores' coach is Owen Mayer (10); the juniors will be coached by Andrew Duermet (11) and Rory Strayer (11), and the senior coach is Jason Bachmann (12).
While getting the teachers' opinion on who they favor to win Powder Puff, the opinions are mixed. Two of the intervention specialists weighed in their votes, with Mrs. McGannon saying, “I think the juniors will win because they’re kind of unhinged,” showing her support towards the juniors. On the other hand, Mrs. Harri said, “Seniors, they are the most spirited, and they want it the most.” showing her confidence in the seniors. Mrs. Potts, who runs the TPA program and is one of the leaders of student council, says, “Powder Puff is a dangerous sport. Let's just hope no one gets hurt, and let's aim not to kill.” With this, Potts gives her stance on safety, showing her concern as a student council leader for the participants' well-being.
The students' belief in who the winners will be was unanimous, with almost all of their answers being the seniors. Junior Sophia Aliaga (11), saying, “Seniors because they always do, and sophomore Charlotte Kady (10), saying, “Seniors because they are good and they usually win,” both showing their support for the seniors winning. While most of the students believe in the seniors, junior Giada Giambrone (11) has the freshman favored saying, “Honestly, the freshman might have it. They have some really good players.” By this, Giada weighs in her opinions being the only one of its kind so far, as she is the only one in favor of the freshman to win.
Overall, the intense sport of Powder Puff will be no different from years prior, still favoring the seniors to win, and still hoping for good health and spirits throughout the game. So come down to Tigers Stadium after enjoying the homecoming parade and watch some male cheer and Powderpuff.
