Marching Band Preview

The show’s title is “Smooth Criminal,” a thrilling show about a heist taking place on the band field. Some of the songs included in the show are Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” Bon Jovi’s “Dead or Alive,” and Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise.” The show will be broken down into three movements, with two of them having a soloist.

The show involves the drumline acting as a security team protecting the bank vault from the color guards, who act as criminals. Drum major Sam Alarcon (12) has a briefcase of money stolen from him at the start of the show. Throughout the show, the criminals, who are played by the color guard, are chased around the field by the cops, who are played by the drumline.

The Marching Band had their first performance on August 30th at the first home football game. The following week, the band played again at halftime of the Loveland Vs. Kings game. The band will play at 3 more football games (excluding possible playoff games). In addition, they will compete at a minimum of four competitions with the possibility of a 5th if they qualify for the OMEA State Finals. The band takes the field in competition for the first time on September 28th, at the Lebanon Mid States Band Competition where they look to carry over their success from last season.

Talking with a few band members, the vibes around the show are very high. “I love marching band because my friends and I work together to create a work of art,” Luka Doctor (12) said. This is always the general vibe around the band. It's a fun and unique way to make something special out of almost nothing, and doing it with your friends is just an added bonus.

When asked what his favorite part of the band is, the center snare Sawyer Blackledge (12) said, “not having to deal with electronics.” This is a jab at the other half of the percussion section, the front ensemble, as they have been dealing with electronic issues all season long. Blackledge has only been marching with Loveland for two years, but his impact on the band cannot be overstated.

Overall, the vibes around the band are great and everyone is growing more and more anxious for the competitions to finally start. Make sure to support the marching band and catch their show, before it's too late.
