Aberdeenshire, Scotland - Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle Thursday evening. The 96-year-old monarch had reigned over the British Empire for a record 70 years, more than seven years longer than any previous monarch.

Buckingham Palace announced earlier in the day that the Queen’s health was in question. The Palace also stated that she was being closely monitored by a team of doctors. The remainder of the royal family was alerted of the Queen’s deteriorating health and were reportedly attempting to reach the Queen at Balmoral Castle.

Elizabeth was elevated to the throne on February 6, 1952, at the age of 25, when her father, King George VI, passed away. Queen Elizabeth II will be succeeded by her son Charles, the former Prince of Wales.
